We are in a restaurant in Grand Rapids, gathered around two high tables. My friend is getting married in a few days and this is her bachelorette party. There are maybe ten of us, including her—her sisters, her favorite aunt, her favorite cousin, a couple friends from back home, and a couple friends she made since living in Michigan. All women, except Kyle. We became close with Kyle because we worked together over the summer. Kyle is “one of the girls”. He is also a man. We’re reminded of this sometimes when he makes sexist comments or says bad, misogynist, films are his favorite. But he is kind, generous, funny, a good listener, and willing to admit when he is wrong, so we like having him around.
I definitely agree that we as a society need to educate our young people holistically when it come to sex. We often teach the mechanics because that’s the easiest to discuss; however there is so much more that young people need to hear from us.
Also, waiting to lose your virginity marriage puts you in a difficult position. As someone who experienced this, it comes with a lot of pressure! Sex turns into something you have to/ are expected to do as opposed to something that just occurred out of natural desire.
This article made me cry. Thank you for this.
"I wish someone told me, as a girl, that my body belonged to me and that it was a good body to have." YES.
